I am dancing in a drought

and I’m riding the train with my best friend

and I am becoming so beautiful

ever since I left the city

    I didn’t have the heart

to make space in the suitcase

    for your present

I think of you in moments of faith

I wonder if you’re ever looking

    when it’s most inconvenient

you listen to the rain tapping

on the metal roof of your house

    you have fallen in love

    without fear or inhibition

making the stars twirl and rotate

    behind the silver screen

    in your absence

    I walked to each tree

    and said “I’m really sorry

    are you okay”

    with the leaves leaving

    and the bare shoulders

    last night’s water droplets

    floating and falling

    and becoming

    oceans and shipwrecks

    knocking on wood

you will choose to toss and turn

    away from you

    I am breaking and rebuilding

    the night and the moon

    “we is a memory”

    you still love

even if you will never be anyone but yourself
